I was given a bass guitar for Christmas by a particularly generous co-worker. It's a 1987 Charvel / Jackson through-neck. I picked up the amp on sale, and I've been having a ton of fun with it. I've played keyboards for over 20 years, so I'm quite familiar with music theory, reading music, etc., it's just the skill set of playing a guitar-like instrument that I'm needing to pick up.

In the picture I have Rotosound 66 strings on it, but they tore my fingers up something fierce, so I swapped them out for some nickel D'Addarios.

I picked up Rocksmith 2014 and have been enjoying it's take on "real instrument Guitar Hero" gameplay. It's fun but I'm not entirely convinced that it's teaching me anything more than the mechanics of certain songs.

Uh, to try to make it car-related, uh... it's a good thing I have a wagon so that I can easily schlep the bass and amp around!

I play both bass and guitar. It helps me to think of a guitar like a keyboard. Chords are made up of the same notes as on the piano and all the scales apply. It's just a matter of learning where notes are and what sounds good together. I hope that made sense...

I played bass for many years. Professional for slightly less years. Brings me a huge sad thinking about it now

Gotta get a jerb. Gotta get insurance. Gotta get my wrists unfucked.

I bought a $85 ex-rental beater bass about 15 years ago because I needed a bass to record with. It's a horrible, hard to play PBass clone. The intonation is great, but damn, it's hard to play. No matter what gauge strings, trussbar or bridge height adjustment makes it any better.

Answer: Yes, I can play the bass, but I'm not a bass player. I feel the same way about drum programing. I can write drum parts, but I'm not a drummer.

Body thru neck? The good Jackson/Charvels were American made, the cheaper ones were made in Japan back then. Where was that one made?

bassist here :]

It's good that you know the basic components to create a song. One thing that always helped me with bass was to pay really close attention to the drummer first, guitars second. Just keep listening to older music and see listen to the bass lines :] Those older jams are the best foundation

I've dabbled with it since high school, played a decent amount when I worked at a music store in high school...but not so much.

Played trumpet since I was 12, and that's a skill that's gone away. Miss playing drums more than anything else though, damn apartment.

It's one of the cheaper Japanese built Charvels. Model 3B.

I've been playing since grade school. I mostly played classic rock like Led Zep and Jimi Hendrix but I liked playing some 90's stuff too like Red Hot Chili Peppers and 311. I put one together in high school with vintage chrome pick-up covers and a custom made plexiglass pickguard. The one on the left is a junior p-bass model I picked up cheap because a college professor didn't like the way I had my blue one set up. He wouldn't pass me unless I got a new bass. Most difficult 1 credit class I ever took... Trying to sell it now on CL but no bites.

Japanese made nice stuff back in the 80s. Since then Mexico and China get all the work, and that stuff is pretty horrible.

Here's my piece of shit.
